MARK DOBBS ANTIQUES RESTORATION SERVICE WIRRAL

...40 years+ restoring fine furniture to the antiques trade,

collectors and private customers...

About

ABOUT

I have been involved in the restoration of antique furniture from the age of 18, as an apprentice at the well established Liverpool firm, 'Gostin's of Liverpool' and then, on a self-employed basis, from 1987. In this time, I have restored fine furniture for the antiques trade, collectors and private customers. I cover all aspects of polishing and wood repairs from light fettling projects to complete furniture rebuilds, using generations old traditional methods, tools and materials with a fine attention to detail. My aim has always been for sympathetic restoration, blending new repairs as seamlessly as possible with the original surfaces and patination.

I have in stock a large selection of original antique brass fittings and hardware - for example keys, hinges, locks, castors, antique screws, hand-forged nails etc. - to help with the replacement of missing and damaged parts where necessary as well as a huge variety of antique timbers and veneers for matching in repairs.

I also accept commissions to make small, replica antique furniture as well as modern furniture items to order. For this service please get in touch via the 'Contacts' page.

Projects

Below is a selection of repair projects. Click on the pics below to zoom in.

Edwardian ornately carved mahogany torchere/urn stand in the Georgian style with damaged fretwork gallery. Pictures show new sections being made, clamped and glued in place and colour matched (the stand overall was given a light clean and polish).

A Victorian upholstered armchair. Scroll arm terminal renewed, replacing the missing original section on the left hand side. Finishing with the matching in of colour and patination.

The item below was a customer's commission to build a burr and figured walnut veneered case for a late seventeenth century Edward East 30 hour clock movement. The longcase was made to an authentic design of the period and was hand veneered throughout with walnut feather bandings, quartered veneers and cross-grain mouldings.

Wood turning - handles prior to ebonising and antiquing for a Regency writing desk. Also, the writing surfaces were replaced on this desk and antiqued. Various mouldings, beadings and veneers were repaired and matched in. The original polish was revived.
